The service interval for gas detectors and other safety-critical systems is not an arbitrary decision. It is based on international standards, regulatory requirements, and risk-based maintenance practices. While many companies still service their gas detection systems annually, a six-month maintenance interval is becoming increasingly common.
This naturally raises the question: Is a six-month maintenance interval also justified from a standards perspective?
The short answer is yes.
International Standards Guide Maintenance
The primary standard for gas detection systems is IEC 60079-29-2, which provides guidance on the selection, installation, operation, and maintenance of gas detectors.
Rather than specifying a fixed maintenance interval, the standard emphasizes that servicing and calibration should be based on the operating environment and the level of risk. In other words, maintenance intervals should be determined through risk assessment rather than by following a single predefined schedule.
ATEX Environments and Inspection Requirements
In hazardous (explosive) areas, maintenance is also governed by IEC 60079-17, which covers the inspection and maintenance of electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres.
Together with ATEX legislation, this standard requires equipment to be inspected regularly and maintained in safe operating condition.
IEC 60079-17 defines different inspection levels—including visual, close, and detailed inspections—and provides guidance for determining inspection intervals based on the operating environment and associated risks.
Furthermore, under the ATEX Directive, employers are responsible for ensuring that equipment remains safe throughout its entire service life.
Regulatory Requirements
Although legislation rarely specifies an exact six-month maintenance interval, it provides a clear direction. Occupational safety legislation and equipment regulations require that gas detectors be maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and kept in safe working condition.
In practice, this means that maintenance intervals should be shortened whenever the level of risk increases. Companies must also be able to justify that their maintenance program is adequate.
For regulators, the primary concern is not a specific maintenance interval, but the ability to demonstrate that safety-critical equipment functions reliably.
What Does Industry Practice Tell Us?
Across industry, maintenance practices have become well established. Gas detectors are typically serviced and calibrated every 6–12 months.
In more demanding applications, six-month maintenance intervals are common, while bump testing may be carried out every three months or even more frequently.
The appropriate maintenance interval depends primarily on the operating environment, sensor technology, and the overall safety risk.
Maintenance Intervals and Costs
Cost is often one of the main considerations when determining maintenance intervals.
In reality, most maintenance costs arise from replacing consumable components such as sensors and other wear parts—not from the service visit itself.
For this reason, reducing the maintenance interval from twelve months to six months does not double maintenance costs. The additional cost is typically moderate, while system reliability improves significantly.
Why a Six-Month Service Interval Is Often the Best Choice
When standards, legislation, and industry practices are considered together, a six-month maintenance interval is often the most logical solution.
It is particularly justified when:
- the gas detection system is part of a safety-critical system,
- the operating environment is demanding,
- equipment failure could have serious consequences, or
- the goal is to move from reactive to preventive maintenance.
International standards do not discourage shorter maintenance intervals. On the contrary, they support a risk-based maintenance strategy.
